Write the steps and set the delays
How steps, delays and the email editor work on a campaign's Sequences tab.
The Sequences tab holds the emails of a campaign: step 1 is the first email and each later step is a follow-up. Each step has its own subject, body and delay.

Steps and delays
- Steps are on the left. Click one to edit it.
- A follow-up has Send ... days after the first email. The delay counts from the first email, not from the email before it. A new step defaults to 3 days after the last step's day.
- A campaign has up to 4 steps. Add step adds one. Remove step deletes a follow-up. Step 1 cannot be removed.
- An email with no subject or no message is not sent.
- A reply stops the follow-ups for that lead, unless you turned Stop sending on reply off in Options.
The editor
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| From | The mailboxes chosen in Options. With more than one it says Rotates mailboxes. |
| Subject, body | Type plain text. Variables show as chips. |
| Variables | Inserts a variable where the cursor is: Variables and personalisation |
| Word count line | Words, whether you used "free", and whether it ends with a question |
| Preview | Fills in the variables for a real recipient, or a sample if there are none, and runs the copy checks. Nothing is sent. |
| A/B | Adds a second variant: Test two versions of an email (A/B variants) |
Adapt does not add a sign-off or signature. Write your name and details at the end of the email.
Copy rules
The spam check blocks long dashes, eight stock phrases and more than one ask per email. It warns on step 1 that is not 50 to 80 words. See The spam check and the copy rules. Edit, Save, and run the check again.
Written for each lead
A campaign made for Adapt Insights shows Written for each lead at step 1. You read and edit those emails in the Leads tab: Writing emails with Adapt.
