Search tips for name, website, sector and place

How to find a business quickly by its name, its website, its sector or its place, and what to do when nothing comes back.

How-toChecked 2026-10-10

You will have the business or the group of businesses you wanted on the screen. Pick the way in that fits what you know.

If you know the name

  1. Open Businesses.
  2. Type the name in the box on the first screen, or in Name, website or keyword above the table.
  3. Press Enter. The search waits a moment after you stop typing.

A few words of the name is enough. If nothing matches exactly, Adapt shows the closest matches and says what it searched for instead. Buttons under Did you mean offer similar names.

The quick search at the top of every page (press /, or Ctrl or Cmd with K) also offers matching businesses from the book as you type. Opening one takes you to its record. See Use search and the command palette.

If you know the website

Type the website, for example marshkeel.example, in the same box. The box is labelled "Name, website or keyword", and a website is one of the things it looks for. If nothing matches the whole address, Adapt tries the brand part of it and says what it searched for.

If you know the sector

  1. In the Filters panel open Sector.
  2. Type a word in Search sectors, for example "dental".
  3. Tick the sector. Tick more than one if you need to.

Choosing a sector can bring in related sub-sectors. They show as chips. Click the cross on any you do not want.

If you know the place

Use Location in the Filters panel. Type a town or a postcode and press Apply, or tick a postcode area from the list. To remove an area from your results, type it under Leave out.

Put them together

Sector and place together give a list such as accountants in Sheffield. Add a contact filter such as Verified email to keep only those you can write to. Every filter on Businesses and Directors lists every filter.

Or describe it in a sentence

Ask AI turns a sentence into the same filters. See Search by describing who you want (Ask AI).

When nothing comes back

  • Remove the narrowest filter first. Each chip has a cross.
  • Try fewer words. One word of a name is often enough.
  • Check the spelling against Did you mean.
  • Try Clear all filters.

If the page still shows a problem, see Record and search problems, by message.

What the search does not do

It does not search inside the notes you write on a record. To list the named people at businesses, use Directors. See Find directors.
