The labels on a record

What the verdict under the name and the chip beside each field mean, in plain words.

ReferenceChecked 2026-10-10

Every record says two things about itself: an overall verdict under the name, and a chip beside each field in How we know. Neither hides anything. A weak field stays on the record, labelled.

The five-word scheme (Proven, Claimed, Contested, Unknown, All there is) is explained in Proven, Claimed, Contested, Unknown and All there is. This page lists what the record page itself prints.

The verdict under the name

Verdict Dot What it tells you
Complete for a limited company (or another kind) Green Every field a business of that kind can have is held. It adds "and checked" when each is confirmed.
Incomplete Amber Something we expect is missing. The line under it lists what, for example "2 to find: phone, director email". A new company says little is published yet.
Inaccurate Red Sources disagree on a field. The line names it. Each value stays on the record, labelled, until they agree.
At ceiling for a sole trader (or a partnership and so on) Black We hold everything a business of that kind publishes. A sole trader has no register entry or director to add, so nothing is missing.

The kind of business comes from its company number and its registered name. With no company number it is not guessed. See A complete record, and what 'At ceiling' means.

The chip beside a field

Chip Meaning
The chip that names the register The company register itself states it.
Confirmed Independent places agree.
One source Held from one place, not yet backed by a second.
Held, not yet confirmed We hold it and have nothing independent behind it yet.
Sources disagree Places give different values. The record keeps them and says so.
Nothing held We have nothing for this field. Nothing is made up.

Each chip has three small bars: the more filled, the stronger. Hover over a chip for its one-line meaning. The record page never tells you where a fact came from, only how well it stands.

Labels on emails and phones

Emails carry Verified, Catch-all server, No answer, Will not deliver or Not checked yet, and a type tag. See Email labels explained: Verified, Catch-all server and the rest. Phones carry the kind of line. See Phone number labels: Landline, Mobile, Switchboard and more.

What the labels do not do

  • They do not remove a record from search.
  • They do not stop you using a field. The choice is yours.
  • "Complete" is about the record, not about whether the business is a good prospect.
