Check emails before you export
Use Confirm them now on the export sheet to check unchecked emails, or download straight away.
You will have had the emails in an export checked first, or have taken the file now and let the check carry on. You are never made to choose one.
Where
On the Export sheet, under the allowance numbers, a note starts "Where the emails came from." It says how many of the emails in the file are backed by an independent source and how many are held from one source we have not been able to check yet. It adds: "That is not a mark against them, and every one is in the file."
Steps
- Open the export sheet. See Export businesses to a CSV file.
- In the note, click Confirm them now. It appears when some emails are unchecked.
- The note explains: "We will look for each of these N addresses on the business's own website, then ask its mail server whether the address exists. Nothing is sent to the business and no exports are used."
- Click Check them.
- A bar shows "Waiting in the queue", then "Checking", then "Done", with "N of M". A line counts how many were confirmed on the business's own website and how many the mail server accepted.
- You can download while it runs. "You can download now; the check carries on."
What it costs
Nothing. Checking does not use exports.
If it says "Every email in this export has already been checked."
Nothing was left to check.
If it does not start
You see "The check did not start. Try again." with Try again.
How long
A large file takes a while: addresses are asked of the mail servers a few at a time. Download whenever you like. The labels on the records update as the check finishes. See Email verification labels.
What it does not do
- It does not send anything to the business.
- It does not remove an address from the file. The file holds every address, with no label column.
- Re-checking a catch-all server cannot give a better answer, so those are not re-queued.
